WHAT IS FOUNDATION?
Foundation can be defined as the part of the building which lies below the ground, whose main function is to transmit the dead and imposed a load of the superstructure to the sub-soil or foundation soil.
FUNCTIONS OF FOUNDATION
- Foundation distributes loads of superstructure to a large area so that the intensity of load at its base less than bearing capacity of the subsoil.
- Foundation also provides the level surface for the masonry work for which the superstructure can be built
- Foundation gives the lateral stability of the building against natural disturbances (wind, earthquake etc.)
- Foundation softens the superstructure against undermining or borrowing of animals.
- Foundation protects the structure against soil movements.
