5 main Functions Of Foundation

 Functions Of Foundation

In this article, I will discuss the 5 most important function of the building foundation. We all know that the foundation is the important part of any structure and it should satisfy its main functions.

Every building consists of basically two parts that is the superstructure and sub-structure. The part of the building which lies above the ground or surface of the earth is known as superstructure and the part which lie below the ground is known as sub-structure or foundation.

WHAT IS FOUNDATION?

Foundation can be defined as the part of the building which lies below the ground, whose main function is to transmit the dead and imposed a load of the superstructure to the sub-soil or foundation soil.

FUNCTIONS OF FOUNDATION

  • Foundation distributes loads of superstructure to a large area so that the intensity of load at its base less than bearing capacity of the subsoil.
  • Foundation also provides the level surface for the masonry work for which the superstructure can be built
  • Foundation gives the lateral stability of the building against natural disturbances (wind, earthquake etc.)
  • Foundation softens the superstructure against undermining or borrowing of animals.
  • Foundation protects the structure against soil movements.
