TECHNICAL TERMS USED IN STAIRS DESIGNING

A Stair is a series or the set of steps that connects from one floor to another floor. It can be used to ascent or descent between various floors between the building.

STAIR: A stair is a set of steps and staircase is a room enclosed with steps.

STEP: A Step is a part of the stairs used to ascend or descend. It comprises of tread and raiser.

TREAD: It is the horizontal place where foot is placed for ascending or descending between the floors of the building.

RAISER: It is a vertical portion which supports the tread.

RAISE: It is the vertical distance between the two successive tread of the steps.

GOING: It is the horizontal distance between the two successive Raiser of the steps.

LANDING: It is a place where foot is kept for rest , It can be at the top or bottom of the floor.

HAND RAIL: It is provided to afford the safety of the person during ascent or descent between the floors. 

NEWEL POST: It is vertical member which is placed at both ends of the first and last step to connect the hand rail.



BALUSTER: It is a vertical member made up of steel or wood to support the hand rail.


SCOTIA: It is a  moulding provided under the nosing to improve the elevation of the step, and to provide support to nosing.
