IS BAMBOO STRONGER THAN STEEL FOR REINFORCEMENT ?
BAMBOO OR STEEL FOR REINFORCEMENT
YES, Bamboo is stronger than steel, it is having high tensile stress than steel i.e., the Tensile strength of Bamboo is 28000 per square inch whereas steel having 23000 per square inch.
The study says Bamboo is 6 times more strengthen than steel, but in practice use of Bamboo for reinforcement is null.
Apart from tensile strength Bamboo also have high compression strength than brick, concrete and wood.
Major drawbacks are listed below why Bamboo is not used in reinforcement
- Bamboo does not have a rough surface as steel, thus the bond formation with concrete reduces.
- The Bamboo is a brittle material so it is not recommended in reinforced structures.
The engineers and scientist, using samples of Bamboo and Steel of various dimensions, the tensile strength test is done using Universal Testing Machine and conclusion is made that Bamboo cannot be used for a main structural member in the building but can be used for partition walls or other minor works.
