TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
Transportation means the movement of the men and goods from one point to another. It is as old as civilization. It contributes to the economic, industrial, social and cultural development of the country.
There are three major modes of transportation.
1) Landways
a) Roadways or Highways
b) Railways
c) Tramways
2) Waterways
3) Airways
Scope Of Transportation Engineering
a) It contributes to the social, economic, industrial and cultural development of any country. Development of the country depends on transportation facilities.
b) Every commodity whether it is food, clothing, industrial products, water, gas or medicine needs a transport system for its distribution which is necessary for economic development.
c) Various purpose of trip (Originating and terminating) is studied and trip distribution among all possible destination zone, with trip assignment based on speed volume function, is conducted.
d) To promote public transport.
e) Provide co-ordination among-est various modes of transportation, which improve service level and quality.
f) Planning the transport process with respect to the survey and analysis of existing condition and forecasting the future condition.
g) Evaluating the alternatives using cost/benefit ratio techniques.
h) Provide continuing study for program adoption and implementation with citizen participation and updating of the plan.
i) It involves geometric or shape and size design, Inaterial study, formation design, construction and maintenance.
j) For traffic performance and control and also involves accident study for the safe and comfortable transport system.
